Most people nowadays are somewhat familiar with the laws regarding discrimation in Ireland. For those of you who own a business, wheelchair ramps have had to be installed, when you build a house the light switch has to be a particular distance from the ground to facilitate wheelchair bound people and when you walk up the street have you ever wondered about the lumpy paving they use at traffic lights? That's tactile paving, so blind people will know where to cross.
Ireland is modernising and so is the Internet. Websites can now be made accessible to blind people via screen readers and to other disabled groups through good design practices. We at ilikecake specialise in this area and offer our services for work and consultation.
Accessible design is the name given to the process when a website is designed with people with disabilities in mind. In accessible design all of the features of a web site which are available to 'normal' users are available to the disabled.
Just as when a building is designed with people with disabilities in mind, it does not prevent other people from using it. Where in a building you may notice the inclusion of wheelchair ramps, elevators and lower down light switches, in an accessible website most of the changes are in the background code and make no difference to the average user. The only differances most people will notice is the way we use alt text on all images and the ease of navigation through a site. As these benefit all types of users, an accessibly designed website is a benefit to any company or organisation.
No, ilikecake does not charge any more for an accessible site than we would for a normal site. It is our opinion that it would be wrong for us to charge you more while you are making available a service to people with disabilities.
Yes, it will perform better! Research has shown that an accessibly designed site will not just benefit people with disabilities but the vast majority of the population. It will have a better search engine ranking, more visitors and will be more navigable due to our "shallow navigation" and the inclusion of a free sitemap.
